IS Experience

The course IS Innovation and Emerging Technology to me presented itself as one related to a similar course done the semester before called IS Strategy Planning and Management but after being presented to me by my lecturer Mrs. Smith I realized that this wasn’t just another walk in the park. It was an in dept and detailed course which allowed me to explore the functions and processes needed to stay on top and what it takes to create and sustain a 21st Information Technology business.
In getting the necessary knowledge and information needed we were then presented with an undertaking in the form of a Lab Project to design and implement an innovative Web-based application that uses Web 2.0 technologies to inform/train/tutor/provide advice on a topic/s related to one sector. My team and I had to do a website that brings sporting events specifically international football to the region through the form of a website, a blog and an app.
Undertaking this project provided the medium to work with tools that exist over the internet that allows for collaboration and the channelling and bonding of ideas to create unique products and services. As a group we faced the challenge of integrating multiple Web 2.0 technologies to create a Web based application that had the concept idea of our intentions reflected. So in other words getting the content in the website, the blog and the app to be reflective of the same idea and concept. We also had to decide on what ideas from the group was the best as we could not incorporate all the ideas from the group members into the project so working with these technologies also needed team coherence to ensure that the content to be introduced is of the best quality and will bring the groups ideas across to others.

Web 2.0 is a category of new Internet tools and technologies created around the idea that the people who consume media, access the Internet, and use the Web shouldn't passively absorb what's available; rather, they should be active contributors, helping customize media and technology for their own purposes, as well as those of their communities.
The Web 2.0 tools that i encountered that interested me were the blogs, social networking applications, RSS, social networking tools, and wikis.
Wikis — collaborative Web sites that allow users to change the content of pages easily — can help your organization share information. For the group we realized that a wiki can eliminate the need for a blog or a website because if used correctly can encapsulate the functions of both.
Podcasts — digital audio files posted to the Web for anyone to download and listen to — are a useful, affordable way for nonprofits to expand their reach and further their missions. We also liked the features of a podcast because they allowed pre-recorded content to be streamed on almost any platform that supports the internet.
Mobile Apps — This, I feel, is the most impressive of all the technologies my group and I has worked with because it allows us to take a compilation of content and put them into one web technology while still being able to harness their productive feature with the added ability of mobility.
Overall working on this project was an experience that opened my knowledge base but it also allowed me to be able to work in a team as we were face with several instances that called for deliberation and collaboration efforts to make the project its intended success.
